4 Ways LinkedIn Can Help You Find A Job

5 Minutes

So you've created a LinkedIn account because someone told you it will get you a job. You've had a look, entered some of your details but you have no idea what to do next.

Find out the key steps to making LinkedIn work for you and your career.

Profile

Updating your profile and make it stand out from the crowd by uploading a professional photo.

Write a crisp, detailed summary of your career, expanding on your experience and list your skills. Don't use buzzwords. Check and amend any spelling mistakes. Ask some of your connections to recommend you. Add websites that showcase your work. Add your contact information so that you can be contacted easily. Customise your public profile URL - linkedin.com/in/

 Search

Use the Search function to search for companies and jobs i.e. PHP Developer Southampton. Save time searching by creating a job alert which you can receive on a weekly or daily basis by email or notification. It is quick and easy to apply using your LinkedIn profile or via the company website. You can also register and apply for jobs via our website using your LinkedIn profile. Use LinkedIn Advanced People Searcher to research interviewers prior to an interview.

Network

Follow companies that you are interested in working for as they will advertise their current vacancies. Grow your network by connecting with people you know in a professional or personal context. You can do this easily by syncing the contacts in your mailbox accounts. Manage your connections by ‘My Network’ tab. Don’t forget to ask connections to make introductions.

Research company pages. You can join up to 100 groups. Participate in discussion groups and get your name seen.

Status Updates

Let people know that you are available by updating your preferences linkedin.com/jobs/career-interests/. LinkedIn takes steps not to show your current company that you’re open, but can’t guarantee complete privacy i.e. internal recruitment. Like and share articles that you find or post in a discussion group as they will show up in your networks' news feed. Remember; out of sight, out of mind. Select who can see your activity from the Profile section of your Privacy & Settings page - linkedin.com/psettings/privacy
